An open-air version of the new 2 Series introduced earlier this month during the Detroit Auto Show will be sold in the U.S. and will reach production late this year.

BMW board member Herbert Diess confirmed the rough timeline to Ward’s Auto during the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month. The company is gearing up to launch the coupe version that AutoGuide.com had the chance to drive this month in Las Vegas.

The current 1 Series will be replaced by the 2 Series, positioned as a small rear-wheel drive sport coupe under the 3 Series, which used to hold that place in the lineup. BMW;s plan was always to move the coupe and convertible models to even-numbered nameplates with the same change taking place for the new 4 Series.

Diess said the open-air 2 Series will “likely” be a soft top, hinting that the brand’s top brass hasn’t made a final decision on whether or not a convertible hard top is in the cards. The new 2 Series grows slightly compared to the car it replaces and the high-performance M235i is already being anointed by reviewers as a spiritual successor to the E46 M3.
